Thanks to prompt action by local councillors, the Friends were
successful in preventing the removal by Transport for London of
safety railings outside the West Dulwich gate and the New Leaf
shop on the opposite side of Thurlow Park Road.
Other railing removals were planned nearby, however, and some have been
opposed vigorously, particularly by parents of school children.
Railings around this traffic island (left) at the spot of notorious
accidents in Thurlow Park Road (near the junction with
Lancaster Avenue) were supposedly to remain. However, as the
Friends alerted local councillors, TfL had reneged and put up a
notice stating that they would be removed during the week of
Jan. 21, 2013.
