#81: With very best wishes for Christmas & the New Year.

snowy Belair MansionWith thanks for your support during 2013.

From the Committee of the Friends of Belair Park.

Annual General Meeting: December 7, 2013

This was a very positive meeting, wrapping up the efforts of a very positive year, which had seen Belair Park receive a Green Flag award.

The date and venue for the AGM were chosen to follow a display about proposed flood works which had been staged in the Recreation Rooms, Gallery Road, SE21 on December 6 and 7, 2013. The purpose of these works is to detain water from severe storms, in Dulwich Park, Belair Park and sports fields, so that it does not enter the storm drains all at once, overwhelm them and cause flooding of properties in Dulwich and Herne Hill. The evening meeting opened with an outline of the scheme devised for Belair Park, which was presented by Matthew Jessop of Mouchel. See next page for a chart of the intended works.

Following discussion, Martin Heath (Chair) proposed that the scheme for flood works be adopted in principle, subject to continuing consultation, as the project developed. This was seconded by R. Ramadhan and agreed by the meeting.

Reports were received from the association’s officers. Other members outlined particular areas of interest with which they had been involved. Anne-Marie Braun reported on the refurbishment of playground equipment, a project with which she has worked with Matt Reid. Susannah Peel, who has worked as a volunteer on the wildlife area, gave an illustrated report on biodiversity, which focussed on butterflies (photo above). Nadia Mahmud-Salvisberg, who has devoted many hours to creating a new website for the Friends, presented and explained the website (she also made some excellent biscuits for the meeting). We were grateful also to have a representative of the Dulwich Society, Alastair Hanton, with us. He spoke warmly of good collaboration over the last year and emphasised the constructive and valuable relationship between his society and
the Friends.

After these reports, the following officers were elected. Chair: Martin Heath. Proposed by Anne-Marie Braun, seconded by R. Ramadhan. Secretary: Matt Reid. Proposed by Martin Heath, seconded by R. Ramadhan. Treasurer: Vinnie O’Connell. Proposed by Martin Heath, seconded by R. Ramadhan.

Possible changes to subscriptions and the constitution will be considered at a future Extraordinary General Meeting.

Finally, Dr. Martin Heath proposed a vote of thanks to all Southwark Officers with whom we have worked this year, particularly Dulwich area parks manager Paul Highman and Robert Roach. This was seconded by Anne-Marie Braun and adopted enthusiastically by the meeting.
