First FA Cup winners and founder members of the Football Association, Wanderers Football Club, are adding a women’s team which will be free to play for.
Managed by former South London Women’s FC assistant manager, Kate Vogelsang, and assisted by former South London WFC player, Polly O’Connor, the team will be running Summer taster sessions, a 5-a-side tournament and monthly friendly matches. There will also be training sessions run in conjunction with Wanderers’ charity partners, Football Beyond Borders. Participation will be completely free with players invited to donate their time and/or skills rather than their money.
The club are keen to attract new players, whether they are looking for competitive matches, keeping fit, making friends and socialising or just trying football for the first time. The aim of the new women’s XI is for them to complete a season of friendly matches before the team considers entering an official league.
The launch of the new women’s team coincides with the 150th Anniversary of Wanderers changing their name from Forest FC. Forest were formed by brother Charles and John Alcock in 1859 but after several years of success, the brothers disagreed on the direction of the club and Charles led the club from Leyton to Kennington Oval, briefly via Battersea Park, with the new name ‘Wanderers’.
The club went on to lift the FA Cup – originally proposed to the FA by Charles Alcock – in 1872, 1873, 1876, 1877 and 1878. Wanderers folded in 1887 but, with the endorsement of the Alcock family, were resurrected in 2009 to raise money for charity.
The men’s 1st XI compete at step 15 of the national football system – the Surrey South Eastern Combination Junior Division 2 – having secured consecutive promotions in the past two seasons.
Wanderers men’s team and South London WFC went on tour to Sofia, Bulgaria, in 2013 and following on from a positive response from the players in attendance, the two groups have been working towards launching the new team since then.
